Background of the Study
Press freedom is a fundamental pillar of democracy, enabling journalists to report on issues of public interest without undue interference. In Gusau Local Government Area, Zamfara State, the practice of journalism often encounters challenges that threaten press freedom. Factors such as political interference, economic pressures, and security risks limit journalists' ability to operate independently. Press freedom is essential for holding power accountable, promoting transparency, and fostering informed citizenry. However, in regions like Gusau, restrictions on press freedom can lead to self-censorship, biased reporting, and reduced public trust in the media. This study explores the challenges of press freedom in Gusau, highlighting their implications for journalistic integrity and societal development (Musa & Bello, 2024; Adebayo, 2023).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite constitutional guarantees of press freedom in Nigeria, journalists in Gusau face numerous obstacles, including harassment, threats, and restrictive policies. These challenges undermine their ability to perform their duties effectively and limit the media’s role as a watchdog.
